Sri Lanka Shopping Tours & Travels

While Sri Lanka is a great place to have your beach holiday, destination wedding and your adventure holiday, it cannot be labeled as a shopaholics paradise.

Shopping for certain items however, can be quite rewarding.

There are many gem and gold jewellery shops that line the streets of Colombo and while you may get good deals here, the best deals are at the source of these precious and semi precious gems. The Ceylon Sapphire is a blue sapphire that has become world famous due to the stylish late Princess of Wales Lady Diana choosing it as her engagement ring. It was back in the public eye when Prince William got engaged to Catherine Middleton. Catherine seems to really love this piece of jewellery that holds such sentimentality to her husband, as she wears it constantly. Such gemstones are available at very competitive prices in Galle and Ratnapura. Most resorts and hotels will always have some sort of souvenir shop selling local silver and gold jewellery and you are advised to retain all receipts of any gems and gold purchased in case they are queried by Customs Officials on your departure.

Due to the manufacture of apparel (inner wear and outer wear) and trade agreements with Europe and the West, the country has a glut of genuine high-end designer wear available at a fraction of the price you would pay in your local shopping mall. The most popular branded shops in Colombo department stores and malls are Odel, Cotton Collection, Mondi, Liberty Plaza, Majestic City, Independence Arcade, Crescat Boulevard, Racecourse Mall, Avirate, Amante (lingerie), House of Fashion, Glitz, GFlock, Kelly Felder, Charles & Keith etc.

While these are the best places to shop, there are also a lot of unexpectedly good bargains in smaller boutique stores too. Don’t forget to shop for spices such as Ceylon Cinnamon and nutmeg which is inexpensive in Sri Lanka. There are also lovely little brass shops, antique shops and old book shops that you can browse though when you go shopping. There are many tea bars and outlets dotted through the city, and while the best way to buy tea is direct from a factory outlet when you tour them, you can also visit a tea shop that is run by one of the many exporters of tea in Sri Lanka.

If all of this sounds a little bit too tedious for you to arrange, drop us a line and we will organize a shopping tour with the best places to shop in Sri Lanka for your convenience.
